Release of census dataThe data from the 1976 Census are being released in statistical publications, on microfiche and on magnetic tape. A number of other releases are being published which explain the outputs available and some of the more difficult characteristics. In addition, a number of technical papers are being released with the magnetic tape files to explain their use.
The statistical publications are the major bookshelf reference material containing census results and are ideal for quick and frequent reference.
Statistical publications released from the 1976 Census are:
Characteristics of Population in Local Government Areas (Preliminary)
This publication shows, for each State and Territory, age, sex, marital status and birthplace of population by LGA, Statistical Division, Subdivision and District.
Population and Dwellings in Local Government Areas and Urban Centres
This publication shows, for each State and Territory, population by sex and number of occupied and unoccupied dwellings in each LGA and principal urban centres.
Bulletin 1: Population and Dwellings: Summary Tables (2409..0-2417.0)
This bulletin contains 62 tables at the State or Section of State levels. It summarises most 1976 Census population and dwelling topics, covered in greater detail in Bulletins 2 and 3, and is comparable with 1971 Census Bulletins 1 and 2.
Bulletin 2:Population and Dwellings: Cross Classified Tables
This bulletin contains 79 tables all at the State geographic level. Five major population topics are covered in detail: demographic, birthplace, labour force, income and family characteristics. The first three topics are comparable to 1971 Census Bulletins 3, 4 and 5. Income and family characteristics were not published in 1971.

Government Areas (2427.0-2434.0)

Generally they contain the same information, by Local Government Area, that Bulletin 1 contains for States or Sections of States. Bulletin 3 is comparable to the 1971 Census Bulletin 7.
More detailed information on the characteristics contained in each of these publications can be obtained from Information Paper No. 4 Release of Census Publications (2107.0).
Data from the 1976 Census is available on approximately 2,000 microfiche.
Statistics on microfiche include:
(a) small area summary tables and counts for most geographic areas from CD's up

(b) cross-classified tables giving more detailed statistics on characteristics of persons and dwellings at broader geographic levels.
Further information on the range of microfiche available, and individual table characteristics can be found in Information Paper No. 3 Release of Data on Microfiche (2106.0) and the Catalogue of 1976 Census Tables (Final) (2103.0).
